Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) is pleased to announce the re-assignment of Global Field Staff Duane and Carin Guthrie to Southeast Asia, based in Manila, Philippines.
The Guthries have served for the past seven years alongside CBM’s partners, the Bolivian Baptist Union (UBB). After learning Spanish they worked in community development, helping to build the capacity of national leaders, primarily in the area of microcredit and small business management and coaching through the Economic Initiatives program in El Alto, Bolivia’s poorest and fastest growing city. Through this work, they developed a new partnership with World Venture, strategically focused on faith at work and Business as Mission, whereby lay leaders could learn to integrate their faith in the marketplace.
Building on their successful inter-agency partnership between CBM, World Venture and the UBB, Duane and Carin realized that God was opening a new door to service with a broader focus on marketplace ministry. After extensive research, the Guthries have accepted an invitation to establish a home base in Manila, one of Asia’s leading hub cities. From there, they will continue to build a partnership with World Venture, while being part of CBM’s team ministering to Chinese business leaders in Southeast Asia. Duane has also been asked to help develop a global focus, equipping emerging leaders who are passionate about using their businesses for transformation.
CBM’s Deputy Executive Director, Terry Smith shared, “Too often, churches have been content to train Christian leadership for service within the church, focusing on the routine Sunday activities of preaching and teaching. But our Asian brothers and sisters are showing that a vital part of healing a broken world involves engaging believers the other 313 days a year – practicing word and deed – in the marketplace, at schools, in government offices, industry, banking and every possible venue where they are placed as God’s witnesses. We are delighted that the Guthries will be part of this new, strategic focus.”
The Guthries are members of New Life Community Church in Duncan, BC. After spending fifteen years in the business world, they joined CBM as full-time Global Field Staff in 2008.
Duane and Carin have 15-year old twins, Caleb and Paige. Duane recently completed a Master of Divinity at Carey Theological College. Carin spent eleven years with the Department of National Defense and has most recently taught at Carachipampa Christian School in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
