Kids Care 2011

Kids Care gives kids the opportunity to learn about children in another part of the world through fun activities, crafts and games, to hear God’s word through a Bible lesson, and to respond to God’s love through giving. This Christmas, show you care!

Hi, my name is Monohar. I like going to school. I just finished writing exams and placed at the top of my Grade 5 class! I want to be an engineer when I grow up. It’s a big dream. Most of the families in my village are very poor, but my mom has some pretty big plans!

In 2010, Monahar’s mom, Subbalakshmi, started a women’s business group with some of her friends and neighbours. They began to save together, and opened up their first savings account. Rather than working in other people’s fields for low wages, they plan to use their savings to lease a small plot of land so they can farm their own rice and sugar cane. They hope to start a small business to make and sell papads (popular rice flatbread), and eventually want to expand the business to make bellam (sugar bars commonly used in cooking curries and sweets).

If you wanted to start a small business in Canada, you could go to the bank and take out a loan. But in most parts of the world, it’s not that easy. Eighty percent of people have no access to credit – mostly people in developing countries who would do almost anything to work their way out of poverty and hunger. They don’t want handouts – they simply want to be able to provide for their families.

That’s where microcredit comes in. Through microcredit programs, The Sharing Way provides small loans to hardworking and entrepreneurial individuals who want to start small businesses but have no access to traditional banks. Subbalakshmi and her group recently received their first small business loan of 12,000 rupees ($300) from The Sharing Way to encourage them in their savings and get them well on their way to starting their business. Subbalakshmi is proud of what her group has already accomplished, and proud of Monohar. “My son has the desire to become an engineer, and we will try to save the funds for this,” she says.

A small loan can make a big difference in a family’s life! This Christmas, help families like Monohar’s get started on the journey out of poverty through Kids Care.
