Crisis in South Sudan
I couldn’t hold back tears seeing people
living in grass tukuls in the hot sun.”
Rev. Saphano Riak Chol
General Secretary of Faith Evangelical Baptist Church in South Sudan
The ongoing fighting between warring factions in South Sudan began in December 2013 and the crisis continues to escalate. Global outrage is mounting as reports of atrocities on both sides dominate the headlines. A human catastrophe is now on the horizon.
It is estimated that over one million people are now displaced within their own country due to the ongoing violence. Displacement of families and individuals often raises the risk of disease outbreaks, particularly waterborne diseases. It also means that farmers are not able to tend their land, will not be planting crops, and without a harvest in the coming months, a lack of food has the potential to dramatically escalate the tensions further.
CBM along with Faith Evangelical Baptist Church (FEBAC),
our church partner in South Sudan, is responding.
There is a local FEBAC church in the town of Narus, on the border of South Sudan and Kenya. This church is not dealing with statistics and headlines, but with the very present suffering of the displaced within its community. To assist this local church in its compassionate response, CBM is appealing for your urgent help.
We are seeking to raise $55,000 in the next two weeks to support the urgent needs for food, water, and essential supplies. Your donation will provide food and emergency aid kits, which contain essential basics for a family including blankets, mosquito nets, water containers and a kitchen set. Priority will given be for the most needy and vulnerable with preference being given to women with children under the age of five. CBM is also providing funds to drill new wells within the community.
