February 2, 2016

February is Black History (or African Heritage) Month, and in 2016, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of this occasion to remember and honour the key milestones of those who helped shape Canada’s Black History. These include contributions from early settlement, the abolition of slavery, the Underground Railroad and “notable black Canadians from all fields who have played defining roles in Canada’s history” (cic.gc.ca). Let’s pray this month as Canadians, as we gain further insight into the experience of black Canadians and their important role in communities here in Canada, and make a commitment to become more culturally sensitive, racially inclusive, and justice-conscious.
