India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and is the world’s largest democracy and an emerging global power today. With a population of over 1.2 billion, it is the second most populous country in the world. However, India is still home to one-third of the world’s poorest people. The vast majority of the rural population lives below the poverty line, driving large numbers to migrate to cities in search of a better life.
Canadian Baptists began working in India in 1874, among Telugu speakers in the Andhra Pradesh region. The work included medical care, education, evangelism, and discipleship. Over the century, more CBM Field Staff have served in India than anywhere else in the world.
CBM works in partnership with several faith-based organizations to address the needs of the poor. We work in the area of food security, HIV and AIDS ministries through the Guardians of Hope program, leadership training, community development and health & nutrition through self-help groups known as sanghams.
