Build the Church

Project Profile

ENLACE

ENLACE equips local churches in El Salvador, Nepal, Guatemala, and Nicaragua to transform their communities. Working with the local church, CBM aims to develop sustainable growth and transformational impact in their communities. Support this project with financial contributions and prayer.

The Situation

Guatemala has an estimated population of 16.3 million people, making it the most populous nation in Central America. Fifty-three percent of the population lives in poverty, and Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and the highest in Latin America. The country also struggles with high levels of infant, child and maternal mortality, illiteracy, and other health and development issues. Over the last thirty years, the fastest growing religion in the country has been Evangelical Christianity, especially among marginalized and indigenous populations. Although there are several large churches in the capital city, the vast number of churches are smaller congregations spread throughout the countryside embedded in marginal or rural, poor communities.

Many of these churches are already trying to meet the physical and spiritual needs of their communities but require more practical training on how to mobilize their churches effectively to transform their communities.

The Impact of Our Work

Pastor José lives with his family in the Chipiacul community. He has been a pastor in the Principe de Paz church for the last 7 yearsIn order to generate an income for his family, he also works as an upholsterer and truck driver. The poverty in many families of this community is palpable and evident, and the pandemic has had a significant impact preventing access to cover their basic rights and needs. The program has been very important for the role José is playing as a pastor in this community, as the church is now wellknown due their involvement and commitment to the community.

People are more receptive to experience the gospel through the service, and the program is helping them to strengthen their local organizational capacity to be able to work together and provide sustainable solutions to challenges of poverty.

“With ENLACE, we have learned how to walk alongside our community members, to get involved in the solutions for the needs that exists in our community. Community leaders have been learning the importance of working together, serving together and implementing projects together.”

“Today the changes are palpable; we see a church with open doors, a church that looks after its community, serves its community, a pastor who is known by the community, a pastor with a different mentality. Community leaders have also changed, now they sit with the church members, listen to each other, work together on planning, organizing and serving their community. It is great what God is doing at this time.”
