Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) is pleased to announce that Rev. John Chan has been appointed as the new Director of International Partnerships, effective July 1, 2017. The role was previously held by Rev. Dr. Terry Smith, who vacated the position when he assumed the role of Executive Director in October 2015. Judy Webb, the Manager of International Partnerships, has served as the Interim Director of the department. She will return to the Manager role, working alongside John in CBM’s largest department.

Originally from Shanghai, China, John emigrated to Canada with his family as a young teenager, settling in Winnipeg. Prior to joining CBM, John served as the English Pastor of Logos Baptist Church in Mississauga. John and his wife Ruth, first felt the call to overseas mission during a CBM short-term mission trip to Prague in 2005.

As CBM Field Staff since 2008, they helped lead the growth of the organization’s largest and fastest growing ministry, focusing on Chinese nationals, university students, diaspora in Germany, and the mobilization of Chinese Baptist churches in Canada. Over the past two years, the Chans have been serving as the Chinese Ministries Team Leaders. In addition to providing strategic direction, they’ve also been directly involved in evangelism, discipling young believers, and providing pastoral care for Chinese students living in Germany. The Chans also helped establish a self-sufficient local congregation by training new believers on how to become an integral part of church membership.

John recently completed his Doctorate of Theology at the University of Toronto. Following their return to Canada, Ruth will continue to carry on her responsibilities with Chinese ministries for the coming year. CBM looks forward to having John represent the organization with its global partners and provide leadership to our Field Staff and ministry projects.
