Ken & Wendy Derksen

Serving in Rwanda

The Derksens joined CBM as Global Field Staff in Rwanda in 2014 and have been based in Kigali, Rwanda since December 2014.

Ken and Wendy both work in the area of ministry called strengthening partners or capacity building.  Their role is to serve and strengthen local churches in Africa; by equipping the leaders of CBM’s African partners with the skills needed to impact lives and by enhancing the partners’ capabilities for effective and sustainable long-term ministry.

Ken is an Architectural Technologist and supports CBM’s partners in community development work and acts as a resource for buildings and facilities management. As a Certified Management Accountant, Wendy provides support and guidance as the partners develop policies and procedures around financial management and operational systems.  Although their primary ministry is working alongside the Association of Baptist Churches of Rwanda (AEBR), they provide support to CBM’s partners in Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

Prior to their appointment with CBM, Ken worked as a technologist with various engineering and architectural firms.  Wendy’s workplace experience includes accounting and leadership roles in the private and not for profit sectors.

Together they were committed to serving locally and being active in many roles at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Saskatoon and they supported the community by working at the Bridge on 20th ministry. Ken and Wendy felt passionate about global mission for many years, but it wasn’t until after a short term mission trip to Rwanda in 2013 that they felt that God was calling them to something new.

We have seen spring arrive and the landscape change.  We have enjoyed spending time with family, visiting churches, resuming conversations with friends and past coworkers, and meeting many new friends.  We have seen so much of Western Canada that sometimes it feels like we are on our own “Amazing Race Canada”! Palm Sunday at Broadway-First Baptist Church in Winnipeg included two services, one in English and the
