Livestock for Widows
The Faith Evangelical Baptist Church aims to supply vulnerable widows in Baliet County with livestock to increase their household assets. The cattle’s milk will provide income and nutrition for the family and household. Support this project through financial contributions and prayer.
The Situation
In December 2013, a civil war broke out in South Sudan. The war left behind a population of widows and destroyed properties and loss of livelihoods. Civilians in Baliet county were displaced and at least 600 were killed. In 2016, conflict continued in South Sudan and claimed many more lives. The displaced returning to their homes found nothing left, and many widows struggled to provide for their families in this state of a complete loss. To help widows rebuild their lives and move towards self-reliance, CBM works alongside the local church to distribute cattle to the most vulnerable in Baliet County. The provision of livestock serves to bring a source of income and nutrition to widows and their families.

How We Are Helping
Here are some actions FEBAC is taking to assist local widows and their families:
Purchasing livestock in consultation with families
With the financial assistance of CBM, specific cattle are bought that would best help widows in South Sudan. They are involved in each step of the process.
Distributing livestock among recipients
The number of cattle per household is calculated, and veterinary services are provided by private veterinarians and those employed by the county agriculture departments.
Ensuring sustainability by encouraging continued giving
Women registered in the program give calves and cattle to other families that need livestock to help bolster the entire community.
The Impact of Our Work
Margaret Abuk is a widow who has five children between 10 and 18 years old. She lives with her children in Khorfulus, Upper Nile State of South Sudan, and was recently widowed as a result of the civil war, as well as losing her property. After the end of the civil war in 2018, she began to rebuild her household but was limited by a lack of finances. Through this project, Abuk received a cow, as her household did not have any livestock assets apart from a few chickens that she keeps.
