With the goal of empowering women, married minors, and girls to make decisions which would enable them to have more control over their life circumstances, the project provides psychosocial support to women and girls in Syria between the ages of 13 and 50 who are married and have experienced gender-based violence and abuse. Through the church’s work in the field, it was noticed that many women experience sexual and physical abuse and remain silent either because they do not understand their rights, or because they cannot achieve financial independence on their own if they were to decide to remove themselves from these toxic circumstances. In addition to providing psychosocial support, the centre will provide legal aid and healthcare for women and girls – especially pregnant and breastfeeding women. The centre aims to raise awareness amongst families regarding gender-based violence in order to break the cycle of violence. Children are also reached through protection sessions. These services are provided inside the Greek Orthodox church building.
