Since I wrote the Spring Appeal letter and we completed the printing and delivery to you, via Canada Post possibly 6-8 weeks have gone by.

Keeping up with the pace of change in our world is an ongoing challenge. 8 weeks ago, the world was a different place.

In this world of rapid change and increasing needs, when you give your support to where it is needed most, you enable CBM to respond to the most urgent situations as quickly as possible — giving our partners the ability to pivot and respond immediately with love and compassion.

A gift of any amount makes an impact.

Peace be with you.

Jennifer

For God was in Christ, reconciling
the world to himself, no longer
counting people’s sins against them.

And he gave us this wonderful
message of reconciliation.

2 Corinthians 5:19

The global community recognizes the need for change in our world. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) created 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a universal call to action to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives of all people.

Large-scale goals can sometimes seem distant and abstract. However, they are not to us and our global church partners. Each goal is connected to real people with names and faces and hopes and dreams – men and women just like you and me.

COVID-19 has set back years of progress towards achieving these goals and has highlighted just how deep global inequalities lie. The people most deeply impacted coming out of this pandemic will be those who were already living in the margins.

That is why we need you to join us in helping to mitigate the effects of this pandemic. We need to take this opportunity to ignite a profound systemic shift across the globe.

CBM’s church-based programming helps contribute to 13 of 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work makes an impact on key causes such as poverty, education, health care and gender equity.

There is a story that seldom ever gets attention in the news. It is the story of local churches around the world who are actively working toward the transformation of their communities. Churches play a significant part in community development work globally. Their impact rarely makes headlines, but it is a living witness to the power of the gospel to transform lives.

Behind every target, millions of lives are directly impacted. Let me introduce you to three people who have experienced life transformation because of CBM programs that empower local churches to be the hands, feet and hope of Jesus in places of need.

Padma lives in Odisha State, India. After her husband died, like many widows, it became a struggle for her to survive. The burden of being the sole provider for the family led to hopelessness. The local church in her village recognized Padma’s needs, and through CBM’s Empowerment of Soura Widows project, she received micro-enterprise training and chickens to help increase her family income. After raising the chickens, she sold them to buy turmeric plants, allowing her to generate greater income. From these small acts of assistance through the project, Padma is slowly climbing out of the deepest levels of poverty. Her burdens feel lighter, as she is now able to support her family.

Sixteen-year-old Mutesi lives in Muhanga, Rwanda. She lives on a small farm with her family, but access to water and food is a challenge as the land is infertile, making farming difficult. School materials and fees are a luxury for Mutesi’s family, and she was always sent home for lack of school fees. Fortunately, through the local church, CBM’s Orphans and Vulnerable Children project provides school fees, materials, training, and mentorship for children in need, focusing on education, hygiene practices, and entrepreneurship training for students who finish high school. “This project really helped me. If it wasn’t for it, I couldn’t have studied,’’ shares Mutesi. She can now continue going to school, and desires to become a land engineer to understand more about soil and how to work the land. Mutesi and her family are thankful to the local church for helping them in their time need – inspiring hope. By enabling youth to access education, we are empowering communities towards a better future.

A healthy local church is the place where sustainable development can begin. CBM’s integral mission approach means that our global church partners play a critical role in sustaining the work for years to come. This requires passionate leaders who are adequately equipped and resourced to lead.

CBM’s Church Empowerment project is equipping gifted leaders like Maricela to strengthen the work of local churches for the future. She is a 24-year-old seminary student from Matanzas, Cuba and is also the national coordinator for the youth program of CBM’s local church partner. Training future leaders is one of the most effective ways to impact communities and build the global church. Growing up in a small town where women have less access to higher education, Maricela is one of the few women who has attended university. She says, “As children of God we all have the same right to get an education so that we can face life challenges… In rural communities in Cuba it is often the pastors who do the social work within communities.”

With only ten years left to reach the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the global
community needs to work together to make them attainable. We can all play a part in making that happen.

You have read how Padma, Mutesi and Maricela have been able to experience life transformation through the assistance they have received from CBM and our local church partners. These programs all help work towards accomplishing greater global goals.

Join us today in supporting these goals for a world much in need of compassion. With a global effort over the next decade, we can do our part as witnesses of a living God who seeks to restore creation through Christ. Thank you for bearing witness to our reconcilling God who makes all things new.
