To some, she was SeñoritaMuriel, to others, La professora, and for a few who dared, she was el petadro canadiense1

It is with deep love and gratitude that we honour the long life and devoted service of our dear sister and former colleague, Muriel Harrington, who passed away in the early hours of March 17, 2021.

Muriel Harrington was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario where her family attended Park Baptist Church. Muriel attended Victoria Public School, and Brantford Collegiate High School. She excelled in foreign languages, which would later help her in her missionary work.

After high school, Muriel’s family moved to Vancouver where she attended teachers’ college. When her family returned to Brantford, she attended First Baptist Church, where missionary reports from India and Bolivia were featured. She amusingly commented that the photos she saw of Andean llamas at the time reminded her of “a haughty picture of Queen Victoria.” But through this time, Muriel’s heart for mission took root.

In the summer of 1947, Muriel attended Camp Kwasind where Bolivia was once again brought to her attention. Dr. H.S. Hillyer, who later became the general secretary of the Canadian Baptist Foreign Mission Board, now Canadian Baptist Ministries, spoke of the mission work being done there. On Victoria Day Weekend, May 1948, at a Baptist Young People’s Union Convention in BrantfordMuriel received her call to missions. Reverend Howard Bentall spoke compellingly of the mission work single women were doing in Bolivia. She remembered the scripture from Bentall’s talbeing John 20:21 (As the Father has sent me, I am sending you). And as Muriel herself wrote, “Well, the Lord just spoke to me.” She moved to Bolivia in 1949

For 41 years, Muriel served alongside Canadian and Bolivian Baptist leaders, initially teaching Religious Studies, English and Music to elementary and secondary students, before becoming a much-appreciated member of the Faculty of the Bolivian Baptist Union Seminary in Cochabamba. She also was a well-loved member of the team at Southern Cross radio station.

Upon her ‘retirement’ to Canada in 1990, she continued to serve the cause of global mission back at Park Baptist Church, which later merged with First Baptist Church. She was also involved extensively with the Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec (CBWOQ) and the Oxford-Brant Association of CBWOQ. She continued to volunteer well into her nineties. At a recent service celebrating the 70th year of her missionary calling, the church launched, through CBM, the Muriel Harrington Scholarship for women pastors in Bolivia.

Muriel represented a very special era in Canadian Baptist life when overseas service was measured in decades and not in months or years. She served when single women were making a significant difference in the life of the church overseas while being supported by women in Canada as their missionaries. Her dedication to the church in Bolivia remained firm through revolutions in the country and countless challenges within the Bolivian Baptist Union and in Canadian Baptist church-life. She was a legend both in Canada and Bolivia. Hefaithfulness to the Lord in her retirement remains a poignant example today for so many others

Today we are reminded of Paul’s words in Ephesians 3:20,as the Lord took what she had and did “immeasurably more” than what anyone might wish or imagine. May Muriel know the peace and love of God and may others follow after her who will likewise do immeasurably more than we could wish or imagine.

A Celebration of Life service for Muriel will be live streamed on Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 PM Eastern time at Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home & Chapel in Brantford, ON: www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/brantford-on/muriel-harrington-10109657
