Individual donations made to The Sharing Way between January 12 and February 12, 2010 for Haiti relief will be matched by the Canadian government, increasing the impact of your gift. If your church is receiving donations for Haiti relief and forwarding them to CBM, please note that donations must be accompanied by a Haiti Earthquake Relief form in order to qualify for matching funds.  The cheque must be accompanied by the form, postmarked by February 12 and received by February 19 to be eligible for CIDA matching grants.  If your church has submitted or intends to submit funds for Haiti relief through The Sharing Way, please do NOT apply directly to CIDA for matching funds.  The Sharing Way will make one application to CIDA for all donations made between January 12 to February 12, 2010.

CBM’s The Sharing Way is responding to emergency needs in Haiti through several ways:

Baptist World Aid: Funds are being used for Phase 1 emergency response through the Hungarian search and rescue team, Rescue 24, Baptist World Aid’s team of rescue and medical personnel. Rescue 24 has training and experience in other earthquake disasters around the world and has been part of the initial wave of response. BWAid is also responding on our behalf through the two Baptist organizations in Haiti that are BWA members.  To view a photo gallery of the Rescue 24 Team at work, click here

Canadian Foodgrains Bank: Funds are being use for a food aid project that feeds 1,200 familes in the Leogane area.

Evangelical Medical Aid Society: EMAS has a medical program that worked out of a Baptist church in Bon Repos, a district of Port-au-Prince. EMAS will to help rebuild the church and clinic and support the local community.

Urbanus: Urbanus (a theological network of ministries working in Francophone cities) partners with Christian leaders in five centres in Haiti. Among the pressing material and physical needs, Christian leaders have identified additional needs, including: post-trauma counseling, grief counseling, spiritual accompaniment, better Biblical understanding of death and suffering. Funds from CBM will support a special project called Paraclete to train community grief counselors and mobilize them through the church communities. They will serve the hurting in their cities.

French Baptist Union: The French Baptist Union is coordinating a program of response from Canadian Baptist churches with strong Haitian representation.

North American Baptist Fellowship Emergency Network: We are currently preparing for North American volunteers to help with rehabilitation and rebuilding houses. Funds will be used to help cover the significant costs for materials and equipment.

Now that major UN agencies, military units from several countries and large aid agencies are on the ground and established, CBM is beginning to plan for the recovery and reconstruction phase that will start in the near future.  This will include linking skilled volunteers with short-term teams and providing resources through a number of partners on the ground.  If you are interested in receiving more information on these opportunities, please contact Allan Jensen in our STM department. (stm@cbmin.org).

On behalf of all those who will be assisted as a result of your donations, thank you so much for your compassion and generosity.  We are deeply grateful for your gifts of compassion.
