El Salvador has had a long history of war, inequity, and injustice. Civil unrest, crime, gang violence, and poverty are factors that contribute to widespread migration of those fleeing the country. While agricultural production represents 10-11% of the GDP, it only employs 20% of the labour force.

Since the 1960s El Salvador has lost nearly 85% of its forest cover.
Over 30% of the population living below the poverty line.
About 125 million people worldwide – mainly in developing countries – rely on growing coffee to make a living. But unlike the retailers and Western cafes that sell coffee at a profit, the farmers who produce the coveted beans are struggling to survive.
