Justicetice-Centred Leadership in Togo

In rural populations of Guatemala, illegal and excessive logging, a growing population that requires firewood for cooking, and the lack of promotion of reforestation by both governmental and non-governmental institutions have led to sustained deterioration of natural forests, loss of biodiversity and soil microbiology, soil erosion and increased vulnerability to flooding. In a partnership effort between Iglesia Misional Church, neighboring communities in San Juan Comalapa, ENLACE, the aim of this project is to plant 20,000 seedlings of Hass avocados, Persian limes, and other native fruit tree species (such as peaches, figs, and apples). This will increase forest cover (land use change) and improve biodiversity and soil microbiology in both forested and agricultural areas, thus reducing soil erosion caused by unsustainable land management. The reforestation project will also enhance water infiltration into the aquifers. Additionally, this initiative will capture 42,583 tons of CO2 over the complete life cycle of the fruit trees planted in the area and increase oxygen production through reforestation efforts.
