Spiritual Empowerment and Enrichment of Mising Tribe
Helping to transform the lives of disadvantaged youth, women, and children living in the Mising tribe community by addressing pressing vocational and economic needs through quality education. Support this project with financial contributions and prayer.
The Situation
The Mising tribe, North East India’s second-largest indigenous group in Bishwanath Charali relies mainly on small-scale farming for income. Unfortunately, for more than half the of every year the Mising people living near rivers, such as the Brahmaputra River in Assam, are affected by flooding. With an unstable income, much of the community lives below the poverty line, especially minority Christian groups who are often the least privileged within the predominantly Hindu population. With an underdeveloped educational system, the economic situation of many in the community remains poor; alongside high unemployment and dropout rates, the literacy rate for women in the community is at merely 48 percent.
CBM, along with Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec, partners with the local church to help provide valuable skills training and resources to lead to a reliable income, through the transforming power of the gospel.

How We Are Helping
With the support of CBM, ABC maintains a comprehensive strategy to bring about transformation in surrounding Christian communities.
Promotion of academic success and education
Children from primary school up to class eight are tutored for a better understanding of school lessons and are encouraged to pursue higher studies.
Vocational training for youth
Several youths are taught computer skills. Further, boys obtain driving skills and girls receive training in tailoring to be self-reliant in their communities.
Empowerment of women
Women are provided with financial assistance and materials to continue the family tradition of weaving and knitting cultural shawls to earn a steady income.
The Impact of Our Work
Runu is a traditional weaver. She is 34 years old and a mother to three children, two of whom are married, have dropped out of school, and live with their own families in Runu’s house. Runu teaches nursery school and the family also farms for food and additional income. Through the project, Runu received seven kilograms of thread, enough for her to make 10 items of clothing. As a member of the Mising Baptist Association, she is a living testament to her community that hard work pays off.
